Dear School Board,

We are writing this letter because we would like to present a new lunch program to your school. We call our program Da Healthy Program. The obesity rates in the US have been skyrocketing and it has become hazardous to the nation’s well being. With this in mind, we must remember that schools provide children with a lunch meal 5 days a week. If students were to eat healthy for these 5 days, the health of these children would improve drastically. Their performance in school would also improve due to there new-found health, which would ultimately lead to higher grades. With more nutrients in students’ bodies, they have more energy and can perform better in class.
When we look at the lunch program in the Upper Merion Area School District it is apparent that everything is processed. Nothing really stands out in lunches that is truly healthy. Aside from the salad bar, everything is junk. From fries to spicy chicken sandwiches, unhealthy choices are everywhere. Honestly, when students go up to buy lunch, they don’t go directly to the salad bar but instead they rush straight to the fries. If there were healthy options, the students would not have the option to lean towards the unhealthy choices. If we were to change the school’s lunch program, hopefully the healthy eating habits will extend into student homes and may possibly have great impact on how they eat for the rest of their lives.
The program we have designed is geared towards healthy but gourmet foods and will veer away from processed foods. We will attempt to make lunches as healthy as possible while making them appealing to students. With meals such as turkey and cranberry sauce or chicken breast and fruit salad, students will look forward to buying their lunch at school. The only way to do this is to make sure food is appealing to the taste buds, so
that is what we will do.
We also have tried to keep prices of foods to a minimum so that everyone can afford it. If we were to buy all the ingredients in bulk, we can get better deals and therefore sell the food to students for a discounted price. As of now we are looking at a steady 3 dollar meal plan, which is the same as your current meal price. In our meal plan you will see that we didn’t include any junk beverages such as iced tea and chocolate milk. Instead we chose to replace it with a much healthier drink selection including, Horizon Skim Milk and bottled water. According to many reviews, the Horizon Skim Milk tastes amazing and is very good for the body. Students can get a large amount of calcium as well as other nutrients that chocolate milk cannot provide. They will not have the empty calories from those sugary drinks. We also made sure that there was a healthy balance of the major food groups and included a meal and side dish for each and everyday. We took many recipes off healthy food sites and even from famous people, such as Rachel Ray. The meals will be filling to the students, while also giving them their essential nutrients.
Not only is our lunch program very healthy but tastes equally as good. We have foods like Shepard's Pie, Crab Baguettes and much more. These foods are under the gourmet category and taste delicious. They also provide us with our daily meats, vegetables, and wheat products. The food is at a reasonable price and are fairly easy to cook. The cooks may have to work a bit harder then usual but the work isn’t overwhelming. The students get a healthy jump start in the middle of the day, the food taste great, and the meals are cheap. In the end everybody wins.

Thank you for your consideration.
